Cows Grazing in Fields

CATTLE ESTRUS CYCLE

On average, cattle come into heat ever 21 days. During this cycle, the period of time which a cow can become pregnant is called estrus.  Exhibited by the cow being in "standing heat" the estrus cycle is the 20 hour window, during which AI must be performed.

NATURAL HEAT OR SYNCRONIZATION

Natural Heat:

By using heat detection aids we can penpoint exactly when a cow come into standing heat and are ready to breed.  In the picture on the left you can see all of the patches on the back of these cows are bright orange.  This indicated to us that they are all in standing heat and ready to breed

Synchronization:

Getting a large group of cattle to come into heat together all on their own would be 1 in a million, But by using naturally occurring hormones we can synchronize a group of cows to be fertile at the same time.

SYNCHRONIZATION CONTINUED

Most synchronization protocols required cattle to be worked through the chute at least three times. Each time they are ran through a different hormone is given to them either through an injection or intravaginally as a CiDR.
